Position Summary:

The University of Montana Military and Veterans Services Office (MVSO) provides military-affiliated students with the support to maximize education benefits as they pursue degrees or trade certificates. The office strives to enable military-affiliated students to succeed at the University of Montana through compassion, dedicated resources and educational benefit assistance. The MVSO works with the campus Alumni Association to connect with regional veterans who may be able to positively impact projects to aid military-affiliated students.

The goal of this project is to build partnerships and identify strategies to improve the career placement of military-affiliated students so that they will develop long-term solutions to safeguard sustainable employment once they depart the university and no longer receive military education benefits. The project will include a series of student panels and boards designed to identify, analyze, and implement initiatives that directly address low-income communities. The implementation of student committees and staff/faculty/alumni council will provide the MVSO with a platform to routinely discuss, analyze, propose, and implement initiatives that specifically address the success of military affiliated families at the University of Montana.

The VISTA member will support in the creation of broader networks among the campus and community, designed to strengthen overall student veteran academic persistence and future employment. The VISTA will focus on building networks among key stakeholders in the local and regional community, among alumni, and within the staff/faculty/students on campus.

Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.
