Position Summary:
Chief Dull Knife College is a community based, land grant, and tribally controlled community college established to provide quality educational opportunities to residents of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation and surrounding communities. Inspired by Chief Dull Knife’s determination, our mission is to provide Northern Cheyenne culturally influenced education through quality life-long learning opportunities.
The Northern Cheyenne Food Pantry is a non-profit organization founded to provide food assistance to those in need and strives to ensure that the most vulnerable and at-risk families on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation are safe and have their basic needs taken care of during the most difficult times.
The goal of this project is to connect Chief Dull Knife College students to the broader Northern Cheyenne community through structured civic engagement opportunities that foster a sense of belonging. The member will also strengthen the operations of the Chief Dull Knife College Food Pantry and support programming at Bluebird Lifeways and the Northern Cheyenne Food Pantry.
The member will take a lead role at the Chief Dull Knife College Food Pantry, expanding hours and establishing systems to improve delivery of basic needs resources to students. The member will connect student volunteers directly with elders receiving food boxes from the Northern Cheyenne Food Pantry, providing hands-on support and making referrals to appropriate offices when additional help is needed. The member will build a referral system linking the CDKC food pantry to the Northern Cheyenne Food Pantry to ensure students and community members are connected to available resources. The member will work alongside local ranchers and regional food organizations to grow the Northern Cheyenne Food Pantry’s food supply, including facilitating annual cattle donations. The member will bring students to Bluebird Lifeways for hands-on demonstrations in traditional foods, food preservation, and medicinal plants, and will organize student volunteer opportunities on-site. The member will also support the CDKC STEM Department in introducing bees on Northern Cheyenne Food Pantry land and assist with honey harvesting.
Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to fostering civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across Montana. Led by CEOs from participating institutions, MCNCE works to improve community life and educate students on civic and social responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged leaders.
