Position Summary:

Great Falls College MSU located in historic Great Falls MT, is dedicated to providing a high quality educational experience that supports student success and meets the needs of the community. GFC core learning outcomes that staff & faculty stress in curriculum include critical thinking, communication and professionalism. The goal of the GFC Service Learning project is to strengthen student success, equity, and institutional impact at Great Falls College MSU by developing and sustaining a coordinated, campus-wide service-learning and volunteer engagement infrastructure. For students, service-learning and volunteering bridge classroom theory with real world needs, deepening academic understanding and building vital career skills that will boost employment opportunities and thereby directly alleviate future poverty. Additionally, these service learning and volunteer activities are proven to significantly boost student mental and physical health by reducing stress, combating isolation, and providing a sense of purpose through the betterment of one’s community.

VISTA member will be developing a robust service learning and volunteer engagement infrastructure for students at GFC. This will include the research and assessment of current campus ‘wants’ & ‘needs’, the development of community partnerships that correspond to these wants & needs, creation of communications plan & calendar for events, and development of materials (print and digital) that support these shared goals. This will include VISTA member establishing a pre/post reflection for students after volunteer or service learning events to enhance and critically think about the opportunity provided. Through the development of community partnerships, VISTA will develop a list of volunteer opportunities in a ‘Campus Volunteer Initiative’, which will enhance and grow these vital opportunities for students to give back in a meaningful way to the local community and build that ‘sense of belonging’.

Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to fostering civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across Montana. Led by CEOs from participating institutions, MCNCE works to improve community life and educate students on civic and social responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged leaders.
